Mary Matha College History :

Saint Kuriakose Ellias Chavara – Founder of CMI Congregation

The Embellished legendary story of Mary Matha College

Mary Matha college, started in 1994 as Jayaraj Chelladurai College, is owned and managed by CMI Fathers under Bodhi Niketan Trust from April 2009 and this is the 10th year under the CMI Management. CMI stands for Carmelites of Mary Immaculate, the first catholic indigenous religious congregation for men, started in 1831 by 3 men of God – Fr. Thomas Porookara, Fr. Thomas Palackal, and Saint Kuriakose Elias Chavara.

Jayaraj Chelladurai College (JC College) was started in the year 1994 by the Philanthropist Mr. Jayaraj Chelladurai as the realization of a long standing need of the people of nearby villages for a college.  Mr. Jayaraj Chelladurai was the Founder Correspondent and continued till 2007.

Located in the scenic beauty of Kodaikanal valley, against the green background of Western Ghats, on the Dindigul – Theni High way, JC College was the first self financing college in the District of Theni and was one of leading educational institutions at that time.  It has a spacious campus in an eco-friendly atmosphere.

Started with 4 courses JC College steadily progressed in the initial years.  In 2001 – 02, permanent affiliation was granted to the then existing UG Courses.  Another land mark in the history of the college was the introduction of Co-Education from the academic year 2003 – 04.

Some unfortunate incidents with grave and far reaching consequences occurred during the examination time of April 2004.  In the academic year 2007 – 08 Dr. Kurian Abraham took over as the correspondent.  On 28th April 2009, Fr. Issac Puchamkulam CMI assumed office of the Principal of JC College, Marking the beginning of the CMI management.

Gods loving providence was evident all through these years.  It was the bold and visionary step of Fr. Sebastian Elanjickal, the then CMI Provincial of St. Joseph Province Kottayam as the Managing Trustee of Bodhi Niketan Trust and the generosity of all the Trustees that resulted in acquiring JC College by CMI Fathers.

Under the able leadership and management of the CMI Fathers, JC College has been marching towards excellence, caring for the holistic and integral development of students with a harmonious blend of curricular, co-curricular and extra-curricular activities with the motto Committed to Excellence.

The Process of name change of the college from JC College to Mary Matha College was completed in the academic year  2012 – 13 with the consent of the Department of Collegiate Education Chennai and the affiliating MaduraiKamaraj University.
